This summer, 139 ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û students conducted research through the Summer Undergraduate Research Program, more familiarly known as SURP.

Santiago Serrano ’25, a neuroscience major, and Alexandra Turvey ’24, a biology major, have been selected as Beckman Scholars to conduct in-depth, mentored research over the next 15 months.

Fifteen recent ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û graduates have received Fulbright grants for the 2023-2024 award cycle. 

Students in Prof. Heidi Haddad’s politics class this spring researched abortion measures, introduced or enacted post-Dobbs, across all 50 states. They presented their findings to staff from the office of California Gov. Newsom in Sacramento in May.

Three ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û students did research this summer in the Center for Computational Astrophysics at the Flatiron Institute in New York City, thanks to the efforts of Jorge Moreno, assistant professor of physics and astronomy. 

Rosalia Romero, assistant professor of art history, is an organizer for a pair of exhibitions showing through May 28 at The Cheech in Riverside, Calif., and Samuel White ’23 and Daniel Velazquez ’25 have served as her research assistants.

As a Napier Award for Creative Leadership recipient and a Projects for Peace awardee, Elisa Velasco â€™23 will design and implement a summer program called Sin Límites (Without Limits) for Latinx high school freshmen and sophomores in Oklahoma.

The NSF fellowship will provide ¼«ËÙÁùºÏ²Ê¿ª½±½á¹û students and alumni with an annual $37,000 stipend and $12,000 cost of education allowance for three years over a five-year fellowship period.

Zoë Batterman ’24 and Alexandra Turvey ’24 have been named Goldwater Scholars, one of the most prestigious awards for undergraduates in the fields of the natural sciences, engineering and mathematics.
